We are moving the Youth Center on Yorktown to the School Age Center, Bldg. 575, on Askren Manor. The decision to move Youth Center operations was based primarily on low summer enrollment (our highest enrollment at the time of the decision was 6 for the 11 weeks of summer camp), staffing considerations and management oversight requirements.
This will not affect the summer programming however, and youth may still sign up for the summer program if they wish to attend.
We are making every effort to provide a space at the School Age Center that the Youth can call their own, as well as give them the same quality programming that was available to them on York Town. We have also extended our hours to 8 p.m. so that they have the space to themselves in the early evening.
We see this as a huge advantage, as the majority of our youth reside on Askren Manor. Another advantage the School Age facility has over the Youth Center, is the addition of a full gymnasium.
Parents, I know what you’re thinking: I don’t want the safety of my young child threatened by older high school kids. Don’t worry. Your kids’ safety is paramount. The rooms for older and younger kids will be clearly marked and staffed.
As each day brings us closer to closure we have to constantly re-evaluate staffing needs based on our population, and our intent is to eventually have everything located on Askren Manor. However, we will continue to offer plenty of opportunities of ALL ages, as long as wehave interested child and youth.
